Elon Musk, previously hailed as a pioneering entrepreneur, is currently experiencing a significant drop in public approval as his political engagement in Washington intensifies.

A recent AP-NORC poll reveals that just 33% of U.S. adults hold a favorable view of Musk, a decline from 41% recorded in December. Significant dissatisfaction has emerged regarding his position as the leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a program initiated by President Donald Trump aimed at reducing federal employment and enhancing operational efficiency.

Musk's aggressive downsizing strategy resonates with Republican objectives, yet it has sparked apprehension among a wide range of political factions. A recent survey reveals that two-thirds of Americans express concern over Elon Musk's significant influence in government, with numerous critics labeling his approach as reckless.

“He bought into his own hype,” stated Ernest Pereira, a Democratic representative from North Carolina. Independent voter Susan Wolf has expressed concerns that Musk’s corporate mindset may not be suitable for public service. “Running a government is not akin to managing a business,” she stated.

During Musk's tenure, a significant number of federal employees faced layoffs, agencies experienced disruptions, and commitments to reduce spending were made. Musk's once-ambitious savings target of $1 trillion has now been reduced to $150 billion, with the future of even this revised figure remaining uncertain.

Elon Musk, once an advocate for climate action and Democratic candidates, has made a significant shift towards the political right. He has taken a strong stance against “woke” politics and immigration, a move that has garnered support from many conservatives while simultaneously distancing himself from moderates and liberals.

As concerns grow over his public image, Musk is said to be considering a withdrawal from DOGE to redirect his attention towards Tesla, which has experienced a decline in revenue.

While Republicans celebrate his initiatives to overhaul operations, Democrats and independents express concerns about potential long-term repercussions for vital services, as well as implications for Musk's legacy.
