The Texas Tech University System Board of Regents is scheduled to vote on September 4 regarding the appointment of the next chancellor to lead the university system. State Sen. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe, is the only finalist for the position and is expected to receive unanimous confirmation.
Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec emphasized the crucial role of the chancellor in promoting the entire system, which encompasses four universities and a health sciences center.
“The chancellor’s role is to serve as an advocate for all institutions, primarily representing the university in both Austin and Washington, D.C.,” Schovanec stated.
Schovanec commended Creighton's leadership approach and expressed his belief that the lawmaker is ideally suited for the position.
“From my limited interactions with him, I gather that he is quite considerate, cooperative, and attentive.” “He will be a tremendous asset for Texas Tech,” Schovanec stated.
Alongside advocacy, Schovanec emphasized that the chancellor is responsible for managing fundraising and advancement efforts that enhance the system.
“The leadership concerning advancement holds significant importance at the system level,” he stated. “They engage extensively in the behind-the-scenes work, managing the data, but it is also essential for the chancellor to actively represent fundraising efforts and support the universities in their advancement initiatives.”
The regents' meeting is set for Thursday, Sept. 4, at which time a final vote on Creighton's confirmation is anticipated.
