Recent statistics reveal that over 50% of adults in the United States read at a level below the sixth grade. This alarming figure has sparked renewed initiatives from organizations such as Literacy Lubbock and Literacy Texas, aimed at enhancing adult education and addressing the persistent issue of generational illiteracy.

According to a recent report by the National Literacy Institute, in 2024, 21% of adults in the United States were classified as illiterate, while more than 54% were found to be reading at a level below sixth grade. Local and statewide literacy advocates have come together to provide educators with practical strategies that support adult learners and enhance literacy throughout the community.

Jacqueline Aguilera, representing the Mayor’s Office for Adult Literacy, emphasized the commitment to supporting families and learners. “We’re here for our families and our learners,” she stated. “A robust economy is contingent upon the foundation of strong literacy skills.”

Jenny Walker, the executive director of Literacy Texas, highlighted the vital importance of adult literacy in influencing the futures of families as a whole. Walker emphasized the urgent need for intervention, stating, “We really will struggle and perpetuate a generational cycle of low literacy unless we intercede here with this population of adults.” “The efforts being undertaken are significant not only for the men and women being served but also for the children residing in those households.”

Aguilera emphasized the importance of empowering adults as a foundational step in creating a literate society. “The next generation requires guidance,” she stated. “Our focus is on adults, as we seek to engage learners and integrate adult education to facilitate and enhance future opportunities.”

In a significant consensus, both leaders emphasize that literacy transcends mere reading; it serves as a gateway to essential life skills, opportunities, and economic potential.

Aguilera emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “It’s an investment in growth and prosperity.” “Individuals are encouraged to seize the opportunity to promote adult education and literacy initiatives.”
