As the national job market captures headlines, fresh data reveals that Lubbock’s employment scene is holding firm, with local unemployment dipping to 3.0% in April 2025, as reported by the Texas Workforce Commission.
The Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) has recently broadened its scope to encompass six counties: Cochran, Hockley, Lubbock, Crosby, Lynn, and Garza. The April 2025 labor market report shows a decrease in unemployment, falling from 3.3% in March and hovering near the 2.8% level recorded a year prior.
The civilian labor force in the Lubbock MSA saw an increase of 3,451 individuals compared to April 2024. Lubbock's unemployment rate remains more favorable compared to the Texas statewide rate of 3.7% and the national rate of 3.9%.
“Lubbock demonstrates ongoing strength and steady progress in its labor market,” stated representatives from the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA).
The region experienced a year-over-year increase in employment of 0.7%. Significant job growth was observed in the Professional and Business Services sector, as well as in Private Education and Health Services—industries that continue to play a crucial role in the region's economic stability and growth.
With the growth of local businesses and an increasing workforce, officials from LEDA indicate that the data showcase Lubbock’s sustained attractiveness as a prominent regional center for jobs in West Texas.
