Lubbock Fire Rescue (LFR) took a report of what seemed like a small grass fire near North Regis Street and North Guava Avenue. Due to the nature of the call, only one fire truck was dispatched to the scene. The situation quickly got worse. What looked like a small grass fire quickly grew into a big fire that destroyed several cars and hurt one person on Wednesday afternoon near the line between Lubbock City and County.
Officials from LFR say that the single-engine plane ran out of fuel almost immediately. There were more problems because the fire was located in a "no-man's land" between the city borders and the county's control, far away from any fire hydrants or other easily accessible water sources.
While fire departments waited for backup and more water, the fire spread quickly, starting in RVs, box trucks, and school buses, and eventually engulfing a building on the property.
Many engines and agencies arrived to assist with the containment attempt. Firefighters in Lubbock reported that the fire was extinguished by 6:30 p.m., after battling the flames for nearly three hours.
Someone was taken to the hospital with minor burns and is now getting care.
The State Fire Marshal's Office is now investigating to determine the origin of the fire and the cause of the incident. The government has not yet reported any results.
