
The NAACP chapter in Lubbock will host a voter education workshop this week aimed at helping local teenagers understand the importance of civic participation before they reach voting age.
The event, titled "Own Your Power," is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the MCM Elegante Hotel & Suites.
Young adults ages 14 to 19 from Lubbock and surrounding communities are invited to attend the free workshop, which will focus on the history of voting rights in the United States and the efforts of previous generations to secure access to the ballot box.
Organizers said participants will also receive practical information about registering to vote, navigating polling locations and understanding the voting process once they become eligible.
The event will include educational activities, interactive exercises and games designed to encourage civic engagement among younger residents.
According to the Lubbock NAACP, the program was created in response to voter participation challenges in Texas and across the country, particularly among younger voters.
Research from Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University has found that many young Americans remain disconnected from the political process and face barriers to participation and civic engagement.
Texas also experienced lower voter participation in the 2024 election cycle compared with previous presidential elections despite record voter registration levels.
"Our goal" is to increase engagement and enthusiasm among future voters, organizers said in event information provided to the public.
