Residents of Lubbock are rejoicing over the recent downpour that has graced the South Plains, with local firefighters expressing their gratitude as the moisture significantly reduces fire risks in anticipation of the upcoming Fourth of July celebrations.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Henricks of the West Carlisle Fire Department, the recent rainfall has dramatically diminished the risk of fires this year. “Each year, we see a significant number of individuals who come to the county to join in the festivities.”

Henricks stated. “The rain revitalizes the grass and greatly reduces our fire risk for the 4th of July.” This year appears to be shaping up as quite a rainy one.

Johnathon Rodriguez, an employee at Mr. W Fireworks next door, concurred that the rain has contributed to enhancing the safety of fireworks celebrations. “That significantly reduces the chances of igniting a fire.” Rodriguez expressed that this gives people a greater sense of security.

Nonetheless, Henricks warned that moist conditions do not eliminate fire hazards, particularly when fireworks are involved. “They are unpredictable.” Occasionally, they detonate unexpectedly or veer off course,” he elaborated. “Improper use of fireworks can lead to fires, and we frequently observe numerous dumpster fires after the evening when individuals dispose of still-burning waste.”

Henricks and Rodriguez advised having water and a trash bag on hand when launching fireworks in the county. Residents were reminded that lighting fireworks within city limits is strictly prohibited by law.

“We celebrate the Fourth of July as well,” Henricks added. “We enjoy the fireworks, but our priority is ensuring everyone's safety and respect for one another.”
