It is against the law to leave the scene of an accident, and police are reminding drivers of this after a hit-and-run last month badly hurt a man.
A red pickup truck hit 44-year-old Todd Boicourt while he was riding his electric bike near Idalou Road and the Loop on August 19. The University Medical Center received Boicourt's severe injuries and have not found the driver.
According to Lt. Brady Cross of the Lubbock Police Department's Major Crash Unit, staying at the scene of an accident and calling for help can make a huge difference in how the case is treated.
When someone is involved in an accident and stays at the scene to report it, Cross said, "things change in a big way."
Cross said that a driver who stays could get a ticket, but a driver who runs away from a major accident could be charged with a third-degree felony for failing to stop and help.
"You are facing the charge of failing to stop and help," he said. "This is a third-degree felony." "A very different story from just being in a car accident."
He said many drivers leave due to fear or intoxication, but that doesn't change the fact that they hurt others.
"They hurt someone very badly when they hit someone," Cross said. "It does not really matter what made them run, whether it was fear or something else."
Police emphasized that Texas law requires drivers involved in accidents to stop, provide information, and call for help.
