This Saturday, Lubbock will join more than 2,000 towns across the country in the "No Kings" protest. This is a coordinated show of opposition to the policies and leadership style of former President Donald Trump. From noon to two o'clock, there will be a protest at the Tim Cole Memorial Park. It will happen at the same time as Trump's birthday and a military-themed parade in Washington, D.C., which some people see as an example of authoritarian excess.
A group of local Democratic groups working together under the name of Democrats for Texas are planning the protest in Lubbock. Co-organizer Tara Findley believes that many people will attend. "I would say at least 200 people," she said, pointing to the fact that there was a protest in April that drew more than 100 people.
Findley said, "This is about the government going too far." "We are speaking out against Trump's military parade, which was paid for by taxpayers, the overuse of ICE to separate families, and laws that threaten civil liberties."
People who want to join should bring signs, wear national colors, and keep the peace. Police will be present to ensure everyone's safety, but the Lubbock Police Department stated that they have not been contacted by the Governor's office regarding the deployment of additional officers. The department said, "We support the right of citizens to protest peacefully."
Many people were upset when Texas Governor Greg Abbott deployed more than 5,000 Texas National Guard troops and 2,000 state police to prepare for protests across the state. This event happened right after that. However, leaders in Lubbock say that no extra troops are being sent there at this time.
David Bruegel, Chair of the GOP in Lubbock County, said that people had the right to protest, but he asked them to do so politely. "It is okay to have opinions, but let us keep the conversation civil."
"We are the land of the free and the home of the brave," Findley and the other leaders say as their message. We must be prepared to speak out and defend freedom and justice if we truly believe in them.
