Cannon Air Force Base is home to the Western Wing Commandos. The base has a history dating back to the 1920s when it was a civilian passenger facility known as Portair Field. It later became Clovis Municipal Airport in the 1930s and was renamed Clovis Army Air Field in 1942 for heavy bomber training.

The base closed after the war but was reactivated in 1951 with the 140th fighter-bomber wing. It later transitioned to the 27th fighter wing in 1959. The 27th Bombardment Group has a history stemming from World War II.
