Lubbock is set for another scorcher Friday, with afternoon highs peaking near 97°F. Across the region, temperatures will range from the middle to upper 90s, while light northwest winds around five mph offer little relief.
The day will start mostly sunny, but skies will become increasingly cloudy in the late afternoon and early evening. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop during this time, with a few storms possibly reaching severe levels. Most of the activity will remain scattered, and not all areas will see rainfall.
Friday night will bring some relief, with lows dipping into the upper 60s and lower 70s. The winds will shift to the east at 5–10 mph. Any lingering evening showers are expected to taper off overnight, giving way to partly to mostly cloudy skies.
Saturday will continue the heat trend with another hot day in store, but rain chances will diminish.
By Sunday, a weak cold front is expected to move through, offering a slight cooldown and bringing temperatures closer to seasonal norms. Highs on Sunday are expected to dip into the lower 90s, providing temporary relief from the oppressive heat.
Looking ahead to early next week, daytime temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-90s through Wednesday. However, by the second half of the workweek, the mercury will once again climb into the upper 90s.
Although a brief cooldown is in sight, residents should remain prepared for more heat and the potential for pop-up storms before the weekend concludes.
