In a setback for the Texas Tech football team, quarterback Will Hammond will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. This unfortunate news comes after Hammond suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during the No. 13 Red Raiders’ commanding 42-0 win against Oklahoma State. 13 Red Raiders’ commanding 42-0 win against Oklahoma State, as confirmed by coach Joey McGuire on Monday.

During Hammond’s second start in place of senior quarterback Behren Morton, an injury occurred. Morton is anticipated to make his return as Texas Tech (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) prepares to face Kansas State on Saturday.

McGuire announced that Hammond is anticipated to recover fully, although he is unlikely to participate in spring practice.

“When it comes to someone who is completely committed to returning and confronting the challenge head-on, no one approaches it quite like Will Hammond,” McGuire stated. “I’m optimistic that he’ll be fully prepared.”

Mitch Griffis steps into the backup role following Hammond’s absence. Griffis, having joined the Red Raiders after a season on the sidelines, made his mark in nine games at Wake Forest in 2023. After Hammond left the field during the Oklahoma State game, he made a significant impact by throwing for a touchdown and adding another with his legs.

Throughout the season, Morton has faced a series of injuries, initially injuring his knee in Texas Tech’s commanding 67-7 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the opener, only to further aggravate it during a 41-17 triumph against Kansas on October 11. He exited the game during the 34-10 victory at Utah after sustaining a blow to the helmet.

As Morton makes his comeback and Griffis steps up as the primary backup, the Red Raiders are determined to keep their momentum going as they approach the crucial final phase of Big 12 competition. McGuire expressed confidence that Hammond will stay engaged with the team throughout his recovery, asserting that this dedication will aid in his strong return next year.

“Will is the type of person who will transform this challenge into a source of inspiration,” McGuire stated. “He will return stronger than before.”
