A violent ambush unfolded early Tuesday at Texas Tech University when two campus police officers were shot during a routine check of a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot near Jones AT&T Stadium. The suspect opened fire on the officers without warning, prompting them to return fire and fatally shoot the gunman.
Both officers sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening and were transported to the University Medical Center in Lubbock. As of Tuesday afternoon, authorities have not released the identities of the officers or the deceased suspect.
The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit is now leading the investigation.
According to the Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA), the officers were victims of an “ambush” during a standard patrol.
“This is the daily reality for Texas law enforcement. We stand with the wounded. We honor the brave,” TMPA posted on X (formerly Twitter) following the shooting.
Public officials and community members were quick to commend the officers' swift actions, which many believe prevented a more tragic outcome.
U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX), who represents Lubbock County and is a Texas Tech graduate, expressed his support in a public statement.
“My heart is with the Texas Tech Police Department and the two officers injured this morning,” Arrington said. “While I am relieved to hear their injuries are non-life-threatening, please join me in praying for their speedy recovery.”
The incident has also renewed debate over Texas’s campus carry law, which allows licensed individuals to carry concealed firearms on public university campuses.
As Texas Tech and the surrounding community process the day’s events, local leaders are reaffirming their support for law enforcement. Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available from officials.
