Texas State Sen. Brandon Creighton, a Republican from Conroe, is anticipated to be appointed as the next chancellor of the Texas Tech University System, as indicated by regents and lawmakers who have commended his achievements in the realm of higher education.

On Sunday, Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell took to social media to reveal that Creighton has emerged as the sole finalist for the position, following what he described as a “lengthy, thorough, and comprehensive search.” The announcement follows Chancellor Tedd Mitchell's earlier declaration of his impending retirement this year.

“Senator Creighton has demonstrated leadership and possesses a profound connection to and insight into higher education,” Campbell stated. “He undoubtedly embodies the principles and aspirations of the Texas Tech community … There is a strong belief that Senator Creighton will persist in promoting our goal of supporting students, enhancing research, and fortifying communities throughout the state, particularly in West Texas.

On Sunday evening, Creighton expressed his gratitude, confirming the regents' decision and stating he felt honored by their confidence in him.

“Texas Tech stands at the forefront of the future of higher education — excelling in academics, athletics, and innovation,” Creighton stated. “I can think of no higher calling than striving to create lasting changes that will positively impact the lives of young Texans for generations.”

A regents’ meeting took place on Saturday, anticipated to shed light on the ongoing search. According to The Texas Tribune, the focus has now shifted to Creighton and U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Lubbock.

Support for the decision came swiftly from fellow regents and lawmakers. Regent Dustin Womble expressed his eagerness to collaborate with Creighton. At the same time, Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, praised him as “a tremendous benefit to Texas Tech as we continue to grow its impact across the state and nation.”

Since 2014, Creighton has been a prominent figure in Senate District 4, following a seven-year tenure in the House, where he has significantly influenced higher education policy. He played a pivotal role in the creation of the $3.9 billion Texas University Fund, which received voter approval in 2023, ensuring sustained financial support for Texas Tech, the University of Houston, Texas State University, and the University of North Texas.

The 84th Legislature established the fund to assist those schools in their efforts to compete with the University of Texas and Texas A&M systems, which attract billions from the Permanent University Fund.

Creighton, a legal professional, obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin before pursuing his law degree at Oklahoma City University.
