On Monday, the South Plains community united to pay tribute to the life and service of Dawson County Deputy Jessie Perez, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty last week.

Perez, 42, is being honored as a committed first responder who devoted his life to protecting and serving others. He is survived by his wife, three children, and a grandson.

The memorial service commenced with reading Perez’s obituary, which underscored his extensive years of service as a paramedic, firefighter, and police officer across Lynn, Garza, and Dawson counties. Perez had recently assumed the role of deputy with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, serving in that capacity for eight months before his untimely death.

“One individual exemplifies the qualities of a true first responder, and that individual is Jessie,” remarked a Lynn County paramedic during the service. He devoted his life not only to his community but also to those in the surrounding areas. Jessie served as an exemplary figure for many, and his legacy is expected to endure.

Deputy Perez was fatally injured on April 22 while providing support during a traffic stop. Officials report that debris from a passing semi-truck fell and struck Perez, resulting in injuries that ultimately led to his death at the hospital.

In a solemn tribute, Taps was played and a 21-gun salute was conducted outside following the service, honoring the individual’s memory. A law enforcement procession escorted Perez to O’Donnell Cemetery, where a private burial was held for his family.

The solemn event attracted first responders from surrounding counties, highlighting the profound respect Perez garnered throughout his career.

The South Plains community is in mourning, reflecting on Perez's sacrifice while honoring the kindness and leadership he consistently demonstrated in his various roles.
