A 28-year-old man from Lubbock faces charges of intoxication manslaughter after a tragic three-vehicle collision that resulted in the death of a Slaton High School teacher on Saturday night, as reported by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
According to troopers, the accident took place at approximately 10 p.m. on FM 1585, just east of Avenue P. Initial reports suggest that a 2021 Ford Mustang, operated by Bode Sam Arnold, collided with the rear of a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup heading eastbound.
The collision propelled the pickup into the westbound lane, resulting in a head-on crash with a 2017 Nissan Armada operated by Leo Schneider, a science educator at Slaton High School. Schneider ultimately succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
According to a statement from DPS, “All six occupants of the Dodge Ram were transported … for moderate injuries.” Officials reported that every occupant in the pickup, except for one, was buckled up.
Arnold emerged unscathed from the crash and was subsequently taken into custody. A $100,000 bond has been set for his detention at the Lubbock County Detention Center.
In a statement released on Sunday, Slaton Independent School District confirmed the passing of Schneider, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a dedicated educator who served the community for many years. “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a cherished high school faculty member,” stated the district. “Mr. Schneider made a significant impact on numerous students during his tenure as a high school science teacher.”
The district expressed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, students, and colleagues of Schneider, emphasizing that the loss resonates profoundly throughout the community.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Officials have yet to provide further information concerning the factors involved, aside from the intoxication charge.
