Early risers in Lubbock may consider setting their alarms for one final time to enjoy a breathtaking morning view. The last sunrise before 7 a.m. in 2025 will happen on Thursday, July 31.

Jacob Riley, Chief Meteorologist at KLBK, says that the sunrise on Thursday at 6:59 a.m. CDT marks the quiet change of seasons. We are moving from the long, bright days of summer to the slower, softer light of early fall. Every day after August 1, the sun will rise at or after 7:00 a.m. until the end of the year.

Why? Because Earth tilts and orbits around the sun, the angle and length of daylight change slowly over the year. Riley discussed the subtle yet steady signs of seasonal change: "The sun goes down about one minute earlier every night now."

There will not be another sunrise before 7 a.m. in Lubbock until April 30, 2026, when the days start getting longer again in the spring.

This change may not seem like much, but it can have significant impacts on daily life, especially when getting ready in the morning, dropping kids off at school, and commuting to work. When kids return to school in mid-August, many of them will be leaving under darker skies.

For people who love the quiet of early morning, Thursday's sunrise might feel like the last scene of a summer story. If you want to see the sun rise over Lubbock before 7 a.m. in 2025, this is your last chance. You can go for a quiet walk, a jog, or just have a coffee on the porch.

If you like early mornings and quiet, Thursday is the day to enjoy it—and maybe take a picture of the golden light.
