Mackenzie Park will close Friday from 6 a.m. until midnight as crews prepare for Lubbock's annual Fourth on Broadway celebration, according to the City of Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department.
City officials said entrances to the park from the Interstate 27 Frontage Road and Cesar E. Chavez Drive will be barricaded throughout the day to allow for the setup of the evening fireworks display and other event activities.
Most Fourth on Broadway festivities will take place at the South Plains Fairgrounds, where organizers have scheduled a full day of entertainment, family activities, and live performances culminating in the annual fireworks show.
The celebration begins with the H-E-B Parade at 9:45 a.m. The parade will step off from Avenue M, travel east along Broadway and conclude at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The GECU Picnic Under the Stars opens at 3 p.m. at the South Plains Fairgrounds. Family activities will continue through 7 p.m. and include performances on the Lubbock Music NOW Stage, the Leprino Foods Kids Area hosted by Bass Pro Shops, the Sonic Classic Car Show hosted by the Caprock Classic Car Club, and food, beverage, and craft vendors.
The afternoon music lineup features Hannah Jackson, SPiVEY, Lindsey Bruner, and the Ron Riley Band.
The evening transitions into Davis Smith's Gorilla Law-Palooza concert from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Performers include Mariachi Mi Tierra, Louie TheSinger, and rock band Lit.
The celebration concludes with the H-E-B Fireworks Extravaganza beginning at 10 p.m. Organizers said the display will feature "classic and contemporary patriotic music."
Parking will be available in several locations. Paid parking is offered at the South Plains Fairgrounds, the corner of Broadway and Canyon Lake Drive, and the corner of Broadway and Avenue A. Free parking will be available along Canyon Lake Drive between Broadway and 19th Street.
City officials encourage attendees to plan ahead, arrive early and expect increased traffic around the fairgrounds and parade route throughout the day.
