On August 18, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Texas Tech University System established a new collaboration by signing a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) aimed at enhancing the nation's security efforts.

The signing ceremony took place at the Texas Tech University System Office in Lubbock, uniting local, federal, and university leaders. B. Chad Yarbrough, the FBI Operations Director of the Criminal and Cyber Branch, signed on behalf of the bureau, while Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec represented the system. U.S. Representative Jodey Arrington from Texas was also present.

“This agreement highlights the essential contribution that higher education can make towards ensuring the safety and security of our nation,” Schovanec stated. “In partnership with the FBI, Texas Tech will provide research and expertise to tackle some of the most time-sensitive issues confronting the nation today.”

The CRADA framework enables collaboration between federal agencies and research institutions on projects aimed at enhancing innovation, technology, and security preparedness. Officials have announced that the partnership will target sectors where scholarly research can improve the FBI’s efforts, especially in the realms of cyber and criminal investigations.

Arrington lauded the agreement as an exemplary instance of cooperation between federal entities and universities. “Texas Tech is at the forefront of innovation and research, and this collaboration with the FBI will enhance our readiness to tackle the challenges of the future,” he stated.

The FBI described the agreement as a demonstration of its dedication to collaborating with universities and private partners to enhance U.S. defenses in both physical and cyber realms.

“This partnership highlights the understanding that addressing national security challenges necessitates cooperation that extends beyond just the government,” Yarbrough stated during the signing.

The event highlights the ongoing efforts by Texas Tech to enhance its involvement in national security research, solidifying its status as an important collaborator with federal agencies.
