Lubbock Animal Services (LAS) is advising residents to remain vigilant following reports of scammers impersonating staff to solicit fake adoption fees.

According to Assistant Director Taylor Ruggles, the impersonators have been approaching individuals at dog parks, on the Texas Tech University campus, and via the shelter’s Facebook page.

“They’re primarily locating individuals at dog parks, the Texas Tech campus, and through our Facebook page,” Ruggles stated. “After obtaining individuals' information and phone numbers, they are reaching out through calls and texts with notable persistence.”

The initiative includes providing dogs for adoption while encouraging individuals to make advance payments. Ruggles emphasized that the costs associated with LAS adoption remain capped at $30, and residents must confirm the identity of the individuals they interact with.

“If you ever have a question about whether this individual is affiliated with Lubbock Animal Services or if these dogs are sourced from Lubbock Animal Services, please request to see a badge,” Ruggles stated. “They are always with us.” Every officer will possess an official Animal Control badge in addition to a badge from the City of Lubbock.

Ruggles emphasized that choosing to adopt from official shelters ensures that pets are healthy, vaccinated, and sterilized before being placed in new homes. “One can never be certain whether that animal has received its vaccinations or undergone deworming.” “If it’s a female, there’s a possibility it could be expected,” he stated. “All of our animals are spayed and neutered.”

Ruggles urged community members to investigate and ensure they are collaborating with credible shelters or rescues. “Many wonderful rescues are happening in Lubbock; we’re not the only ones,” he stated. “We are eager to assist individuals in finding homes for animals.”

Authorities have urged individuals who encounter a potential scammer to notify LAS about the situation promptly.
